Juan Ignacio Bousquet
Hi! My name is Juan Ignacio Bousquet (also known as "Juani") and I am a cybersecurity professional specializing in satellite security 🛰️
When I was a kid, I used to dream a lot about science, space, and life beyond Earth. I was a huge fan of NASA missions to Mars like Pathfinder, and absolutely amazed by Voyager I and II probes. I even sent letters to NASA, Pentagon, and SETI institute - and to my surprise, they all replied with incredible letters, mission materials, and photos. At that time, it was unimaginable to have access to all that information; even with a dial-up modem, you couldn't get that kind of material publicly.
In secondary school, I studied as an Electronics Technician and then ended up as an Informatics Technician. At that time, I was loved ham radio, music, and computer viruses. At my school "PIO IX", I met Miguel San Martin, an ex-student who works at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and was part of many Mars missions. He became a fundamental inspiration for something I thought impossible: "working in the space field." Every year, he would come back to show us the missions he worked on, how they operated, and all the crazy engineering challenges they faced.
These passions led me to start a career in both computer science and design & visual arts (film, photography, etc.), and I have had a lot of experience in these fields for more than 20 years.
Today i am working on my master's thesis in satellite security at the Stratosphere IPS laboratory at CTU (Czech Technical University) as part of my Cyberdefense and Cybersecurity Master's program⚡
I have worked in various fields of the film and advertising industry and technology. Among these I can highlight film restoration at Cinecolor Digital Argentina, Information Technology Lead at Yema Visual Effects, Can Can Club, and Che Revolution Post, and my work at two NASDAQ companies, as a cloud operations engineer at Globant (GLOB) and the incredible opportunity to join Satellogic (SATL) as cybersecurity engineer, working alongside industry experts in satellite security 🚀.
At Universidad Nacional de San Martin (UNSAM), I wore multiple hats that allowed me to push the boundaries of technology and education. As Technical Lead at NTI (New Image Technologies Area), I managed critical IT infrastructure and led technical projects for nearly 6 years.
However, the most meaningful work came through my role as 3D Printing Engineer at Lab3Bio LaboCluster (ITECA-LAB3BIO-CONICET), where I participated in a life-changing project using 3D printing technology to save Valentino's life, a young patient with tracheobronchomalacia. We developed a low-cost, medical-grade FDM-printed splint to keep his airway open, dramatically reducing the cost from $300,000 to just $1,000 by modifying a Prusa I3 MK2 printer. In record time, we adapted the printer to work with the required medical-grade material and meet all mechanical requirements for the implantable part. Our successful work was published as open-source in Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology to help other medical teams worldwide.
My passion for photography lead me to document major music festivals, tours and artists, from Manu Chao, Paul McCartney, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland, Cypress Hill, Placebo, Imagine Dragons, The Strokes, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, Arcade Fire, Capital Cities, Krewella, New Order, Vampire Weekend, Soundgarden and many others. Also, i started digging into nature, landscapes and expeditions photography, a work through the planet's most isolated, remote and extraordinary destinations, like Argentina and Chile Patagonia. My work has been recognized in competitions like "ZoomBA 2008 competition" of the SCA (Central Society of Architects) with Clorindo Testa and Marcos Lopez as jury, and I had a participation in the 9° San Pablo Biennial in a site-specific installation by Clorindo Testa. Also my series "People and Places" (2016) and "Sensibility" (2017) were among the most viewed entries with an amazing feedback from the jury at The LensCulture & Magnum Photography Awards.
In my free time, I pursue my passions for mountaineering, music, astronomy and playing with decoding satellites signals with an SDR or developing UAV/drones projects.
Here are some of my achievements and experiences:
- Completed advanced short programmes at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology): Advances in Imaging: VR-AR, Machine Learning and Self Driving Cars" with Prof. Ramesh Raskar (MIT Media Lab) and "Additive Manufacturing: from the 3D Printing to the Factory Floor" with Prof. John Hart (Desktop Metal).
- Groundbreaking work in 3D-printed medical devices, saving Valentino's life with a custom broncheomalasia splint made with a USD 1000 modified FDM printer.
- Founded Patagon Space during the 2020 pandemic, creating a network of space enthusiasts and security professionals.
- Global finalist in NASA's SpaceApps Challenge with the AsturExplorers team's Landsat Connect project.
- Cybersecurity research, including physical security on the vulnerabilities of biometric devices and actually my master's thesis on satellite security.
My early fascination with space and NASA missions has come full circle, as I now work in satellite security and space technology, as well as this participation on NASA SpaceApps Challenge!
